Top 7 Common Mistakes in UI Design: A Guide for Avoiding Them

Hello fellow UI designers! As we all know, it's important to make sure our designs are visually appealing and user-friendly. Even with years of experience under our belts, we may still make mistakes without realizing it. That's why I wanted to share my top 5 common mistakes in UI design and how we can avoid them. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out in the field, these tips can help you create the best possible designs. Let's dive in!

1. Ignoring Project Scope

It's easy to get carried away with adding features to an application, especially if they seem like a good idea at the time. However, it's important to remember that adding too many features can overcomplicate the development process and bring no additional value to the application. It's essential to keep the business objectives, project scope, timeline, and the way products are developed in mind when prioritizing features for design.

For example, if you're designing an option for users to upload a profile picture, it might be tempting to also add functionality to crop, scale, and rotate the photo. While these features may seem like a good idea, they could complicate the design and be tricky to implement in development. A safer bet is to avoid adding features unless they are essential to the product you are designing.

Remember to keep the business and user goals at the forefront of the design process to ensure that the features you choose will be most beneficial to the application and its users.

2. Poor Handoff Preparation

Effective design handoff is essential to ensure that your work is understood and implemented correctly by developers. When preparing for handoff, it's important to organize and document our designs in a way that makes them easy to understand and use.

Your design files should be organized and named in a logical way, with artboards arranged horizontally in the order in which they will be clicked through. It's also important to include all necessary design elements, such as icons in SVG format and high-quality versions of any images used in the design.

To help my team stay organized, I have implemented the following 3 practices in our workflow:

1. Storing all Figma files and design assets in a cloud-based folder (GoogleDrive)

2.  Naming each layer and group when designing in Figma for instance.

3.  Titling and arranging artboards horizontally based on the intended user flow.

3. Designing before preparing the website context

Preparing the website context with the client is the first step you should consider before starting the design process.

Focusing on the design without a clear plan for the content is not beneficial for you. Why? Because when the content is not determined before the design process, the layout and visuals may not fit properly when the placeholder text is eventually replaced.

This can result in a disorganized and empty looking website. This may lead to a website that appears disorganized and lacking in substance. In addition, it may lead to additional effort to adjust the layout to fit the final context.

4. Copying other designers blindly without following the design trends

It's easy to get caught up in the world of design inspiration and lose sight of the objectives of our design. It's natural to be drawn to eye-catching animations, gradients, and other design elements, but it's important to remember that simply copying these elements without considering their purpose or relevance to our project can be counterproductive.

Inspiration is a valuable tool for designers, and sites like Dribbble or Behance can be a great source of ideas and inspiration. However, it's important to be mindful of the difference between being inspired by others' work and blindly copying it. Instead of simply copying UI elements because they look good, it's essential to consider whether they are appropriate and effective for our project. By approaching design in this way, we can create original and purposeful designs that meet the needs of our users.

5. Prioritizing Aesthetics Over Functionality

While it's important to create a visually appealing design, it's equally important to prioritize functionality. When aesthetics take precedence over functionality, the user experience can suffer. For example, a website that is heavily designed with flashy graphics and animations may look impressive, but if it takes a long time to load or is difficult to navigate, users will quickly become frustrated and leave.

On the other hand, a website that prioritizes functionality may not be as visually impressive, but it will be easy to use and provide a better overall experience for the user. It's important to strike a balance between aesthetics and functionality in order to create an effective and enjoyable user experience.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, there are several common mistakes that UI designers should be mindful of to create effective and user-friendly designs.
These mistakes include:

1. Ignoring Project Scope
2. Poor Handoff Preparation
3. Designing before preparing the website context
4. Copying other designers blindly without following the design trends
5. Prioritizing Aesthetics Over Functionality

By being mindful of these common mistakes, you can create designs that are both effective and user-friendly. Not only will this better meet the needs of your client's users, but it will also make the design process easier for your team.
